If we think of culture of that which makes us human—meaning that it removes us from being animals—isn't it ironic because smell is the most animalistic sense. In evolutionary terms, before we started standing upright our noses were closer to the ground. Animals that are closer to the ground rely more on the sense of smell to experience and engage with the world.
